History

The Reading Liederkranz, which was one of eleven German organizations in the late 1800's was organized as a German Singing Society on July 23, 1885.  For the first seventeen years our singers practiced in a number of rented facilities throughout Reading.  Finally on March 26, 1902 property at 833-835 Chestnut Street was purchased.  Then in 1909 the building was razed, and a new club house was built.  This new building was dedicated on the occasion of the 5th Sangerfest of the United Singers of PA., June 19-22, 1910.  The Chestnut Street building was designed to be a singing hall and would serve as our home for the next 88 years.  In 1990 we moved to our present location at 143 Spook Lane.

Today the Reading Liederkranz is blessed with 5 sections.  The Reading Liederkranz Singer's, established on July 23, 1885; the Germania Soccer Club, established on April 26, 1926; the GTV Edelweiss Dancer's, established in 1949; the Eagle Mountain Home, established on July 10, 1902 and became a section in 1990; and the Ladies Auxiliary.

We have 5.4 Acres, for ample parking and outside activities.  Our Club House has a dining room with a capacity of 200, plus a large dance floor and a separate bar and Rathskiller.  Two large pavilions, including a large wooden dance floor.  We also have a full outside kitchen as well as a bar and a Bier Garden.  Seating outside will accommodate 1000 People.  A kinder play area is also available for our junior members.  We rent out our facilities and will cater your event.

Today we are proud to uphold the German Traditions of language, culture and family.  Our activities are many and diverse.  From Faschings, Bochbier Celebrations to the largest Oktoberfest in Berks County.  Many of our events are open to the public.  I invite you and your family or friends to visit us.
